Sweden and the UK throw their weight behind
renewed post-Georgia bid for partnership,
despite objections of Poland and Lithuania.
Lithuania and Poland – Moscow's harshest critics
in the EU – were increasingly isolated after David
Miliband and Carl Bildt, the foreign ministers of
the United Kingdom and Sweden respectively
and not typically soft on Russia, issued a statement
in support of a resumption of talks just hours before
the foreign ministers met today. They said that a
strategic partnership with Russia was “not in place
as of today” but that it was in the interest of both
the EU and Russia to conclude a partnership agreement.
“We need and want to work with Russia,”
the statement read, echoing similar earlier messages
from the European Commission.
